How it works
The first step is to research the area or areas you’re interested in working. To find out which career is for you, visit http://www.myfuture.edu.au/
Then you will need to find an employer in that area. There are two ways to do this:
- approach a Group Training Organisation (also known as a Group Employment Organisation) who would employ you and place you with either one or a number of host employers
- find an employer who is willing to offer you a Australian Apprenticeship in your chosen field. This is called direct employment.
Once you’ve organised an employer, you will need to discuss training and employment conditions with them. This is where MEGT’s Australian Apprenticeships Centre staff can help you. They will visit you and your employer in the workplace and discuss training and the government paperwork that is required.
Together, you and your employer will discuss and sign a Training Contract. Ideally, this should be arranged within the first two weeks of you beginning work.
You will also need to choose a Registered Training Organisation and enrol within three months of starting your Apprenticeship or Traineeship. After that you are on your way to becoming competent in a range of skills and of gaining a nationally recognised qualification.
